Georgia’s Post-Euro Journey

It seems Georgia’s peak performance might have been reserved for the European Championship and the initial two matches of the Nations League campaign.

Euro 2024 Success Story

As many recall, the Georgians made history by qualifying for the Euros for the first time. Not only did they secure third place in a tough group featuring Portugal, Turkey, and the Czech Republic, but they also advanced to the Round of 16. There, they faced eventual champions Spain, suffering a 1-4 defeat despite holding a lead for some time. Their memorable 2-0 victory over Portugal was a key factor in their progression to the knockout stages.

Nations League Rollercoaster

Their Nations League journey began spectacularly with two consecutive wins against the Czech Republic (4-1) and Albania (1-0). However, their form then faltered, as they managed only one point from their subsequent four matches: Ukraine (0-1, 1-1), Albania (0-1), and the Czech Republic (1-2). These results saw them drop to third position, leading to a playoff against Armenia to retain their League B status. Kvaratskhelia and his teammates emphatically clinched this objective with dominant victories of 3-0 and 6-1.

Mundial Qualifiers and Pre-Season Concerns

The qualification campaign for the “Mundial” (World Cup) is just beginning for Willy Sagnol’s squad, but their preparation through two friendly matches has raised some minor concerns. First, they managed only a minimal home victory against the Faroe Islands, followed by a surprising 1-1 draw with Cape Verde.

Turkey’s Post-Euro Resilience

Turkey, similarly to Georgia, exited the European Championship in the Round of 16 in a heartbreaking fashion, losing 1-2 to the Netherlands after holding a lead until the 70th minute. Despite finishing second in their Nations League group with Wales, Iceland, and North Macedonia, they managed to secure promotion to League A. An unexpected away loss to North Macedonia (1-3) forced them into playoffs, where they brilliantly overcame a strong Hungary side with two convincing wins (3-1, 3-0).

US Tour and Offensive Prowess

Ahead of their qualification campaign, Vincenzo Montella’s squad traveled to the United States for matches against the USA and Mexico. While they defeated the Americans 2-1, they narrowly lost 0-1 to Mexico, one of North America’s strongest national teams. A lack of clinical finishing was a factor, as Turkey largely outplayed Mexico in many aspects of the game.

Key Players and World Cup Aspirations

The Turkish attack, spearheaded by Calhanoglu, Güler, and Aktürkoğlu, is particularly impressive, having scored 17 goals in ten matches across official and friendly fixtures. They can confidently be considered prime contenders for at least the second spot in the group. And who knows, they might even challenge a powerful Spain, especially when playing at home.

Match Prediction: Turkey to Edge Out Georgia

Current Georgia doesn’t inspire much confidence. Perhaps something will change in their opening two qualification matches, but their recent games against the Faroe Islands and Cape Verde clearly demonstrated persistent issues with attacking inconsistency and defensive lapses, mirroring those seen in the Nations League. Even the Faroe Islands had chances to score, lacking only the quality to convert. Turkey, on the other hand, is showing continuous improvement with each match. They looked impressive against the USA and particularly against Mexico, where they arguably deserved at least a draw. Furthermore, one cannot ignore Turkey’s formidable attack; they’ve only failed to score against Mexico (twice) and Wales in their last ten encounters. In contrast, Georgia has managed to keep a clean sheet only three times over the same period. These two teams met just a year ago at the European Championship, where Montella’s side convincingly defeated Sagnol’s men 3-1. Therefore, Turkey is well aware of Georgia’s vulnerabilities. I suggest betting in favor of Turkey, but given this is an away fixture, I’ll play it safer with a “draw no bet” (0 handicap) option. National Teams. World Cup. 2026. Qualification. Europe.
