Francesco Modesto, head coach of Mantova, spoke during the post-match press conference following the goalless draw against Carrarese. Modesto noted that the team showed the right attitude, building upon the positive momentum felt during their previous game against Empoli.
“Today was a challenging match,” Modesto stated. “Carrarese is a well-established side that consistently puts many teams under pressure. We performed strongly defensively, but we also had a good opportunity to take the lead in the first half. Finishing the game with a clean sheet is vital for us.”
When questioned about Mantova’s struggles in the second half, Modesto elaborated on the dynamics of the game. “We played well in the initial phase. Carrarese utilizes set pieces very effectively, and we managed to handle them successfully. In the second half, our opponents started aggressively, but we managed to threaten them again after making substitutions. They were determined to win at home, forcing us to drop back and defend, relying on counter-attacks.”
Modesto stressed the importance of securing the single point. “It was crucial to bring at least one point home. Now we will take a break and reconvene on January 3rd.”
Discussing what was lacking, specifically the inability to score, Modesto regretted the chance missed by Mancuso. “It’s a shame about the opportunity squandered by Mancuso; he is a player who consistently scores, but these things happen. I am much happier, however, that we did not concede any goals. It was a scrappy game, and we defended effectively. We still have many areas to improve. The season is long, and we will have to fight hard on every pitch.”
When asked for his assessment of the team and future plans, Modesto confirmed that improvements are needed. “We must strengthen the squad. I have already discussed the specific roles and positions requiring new players with the director. We will do everything possible to secure new additions. Whoever joins us must be fully convinced and dedicated to the work we need to accomplish.”
Modesto also shared his view on the controversial contact between Zuelli and Ruocco inside the penalty area. “From my distant vantage point, it appeared that Zuelli might have made contact with Ruocco`s leg when kicking, but the referee assessed the episode as legal. I believe these situations are generally interpreted correctly by the officials.”
Finally, Modesto reported on his discussion with the players after the match. “The lads are relaxed. They are heading home to their families to rest. They were particularly pleased about keeping the clean sheet.”
