Match Preview: Hoffenheim vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Match Overview

The Matchday 2 Bundesliga clash between Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt will take place on August 30 at the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim. Here’s our comprehensive preview covering the prediction, betting tips, odds, and key statistics.

Hoffenheim Team Analysis

Current Form and Standings

Christian Ilzer’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in their opening match on the road. This win snapped a five-game winless streak in the Bundesliga (2 draws, 3 losses) for Hoffenheim. Furthermore, it marked the first time in their last six league encounters that the team conceded less than two goals. With three points, the club currently sits in sixth place in the league table.

Hoffenheim Statistics

  • The team has failed to win 10 of their last 11 home matches in the Bundesliga (5 draws, 5 losses).
  • The club scored exactly 1 or 2 goals in 6 of their last 8 home league matches.
  • Hoffenheim conceded in 36 of their last 37 home Bundesliga fixtures.

Hoffenheim’s Predicted Lineup (4-4-2)*

Oliver Baumann – Bernardo, Koki Machida, Robin Granach, Vladimir Coufal – Bazoumana Touré, Wouter Burger, Leon Adballahu, Andrej Kramarić – Tim Lemperle, Fisnik Asllani.

Team News: Hoffenheim Injuries

Defender Valentin Gendrey and forward Adam Hložek are injured.

Eintracht Frankfurt Team Analysis

Current Form and Standings

Dino Toppmöller’s charges convincingly defeated Werder Bremen 4-1 at home in the opening round. This result extended Eintracht’s unbeaten run in the league to seven matches (4 wins, 3 draws). Additionally, for the fourth time in this period, the club managed to score at least three goals. However, the team has conceded in their last four Bundesliga outings. Eintracht Frankfurt currently occupies second place in the league table.

Eintracht Frankfurt Statistics

  • The club has remained unbeaten in 7 of their last 9 away Bundesliga matches (3 wins, 4 draws).
  • The team conceded exactly 1 or 2 goals in 6 of their last 9 previous away league games.
  • Eintracht Frankfurt scored no more than one goal in 7 of their last 10 away Bundesliga matches.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Predicted Lineup (4-5-1)*

Michael Zetterer – Rasmus Kristensen, Nnamdi Collins, Robin Koch, Arthur Theate – Ritsu Doan, Hugo Larsson, Can Uzun, Farès Chaïbi, Jean-Matteo Bahoya – Jonathan Burkardt.

Match Prediction: Hoffenheim vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Analysis of Goal Expectancy

Despite both teams demonstrating effective attacking prowess in the opening round, I do not anticipate a high-scoring affair in their head-to-head encounter. Hoffenheim rarely showcases their best creative form at home: in their last 11 Bundesliga home matches, the team scored more than one goal only three times, and never more than two goals during this period. Simultaneously, in their previous six home league fixtures, the club conceded more than one goal only against Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Eintracht’s Away Form and Defensive Record

Eintracht Frankfurt does not boast high scoring efficiency away from home: in 7 of their last 10 Bundesliga away matches, the club’s players scored a maximum of one goal. Moreover, in their nine previous away league fixtures, the team allowed opponents to score more than one goal on only three occasions, with one of these instances being against Bayern Munich. Additionally, Eintracht kept two clean sheets during this period.

Final Betting Tip

My prediction:  Total Goals Under 3.5 with odds of 1.67 Bookmaker Logo

Alternatively, an Over 3 total is possible, but I anticipate the main contribution to the total goals coming from the visitors, and here’s why:

Hoffenheim’s Personnel Losses

Following their difficult victory over Bayer Leverkusen (which was frankly awful), the team lost two key defensive players. Centre-back Machida, who had just transferred from Union (the Belgian one), immediately became a primary and leading central defender for the club. However, he tore his ACL and is out for a long time. Defensive midfielder Burger also sustained an injury — after his move from Stoke, he took the place of Stach, who went to Leeds. This signifies the loss of a crucial destroyer in the midfield. Other previously essential defenders, Kabak and Gendrey, are also injured. Another defensive midfielder, Grillitsch, is expected to leave the squad. This is a very painful blow to Hoffenheim’s defensive potential, which was already at a low level. Since Ilzer’s appointment as head coach, Hoffenheim has conceded a staggering 49 goals in the Bundesliga; only Kiel has conceded more during the same period. And today, the club will play without a fundamental central defender and an equally important defensive midfielder. I should also note that the participation of the currently starting right-back Coufal, who was brought in to replace the departed veteran Kaderabek and the injured Gendrey, is highly questionable. And let’s not forget about Nsoki’s departure – a central defender who played 1307 minutes last season. Central midfielders Stach and Bischof have also left. Yes, they just signed a young centre-back from Lugano… Is it an improvement? Only in the long term. So, we’ll see Chavez and Granach defending, among others. And who will be in the defensive midfield? It’s anyone’s guess.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Strong Start

I wrote a preview for their home match against a disorganized Werder Bremen. The result was a 4-1 victory with a significant advantage in play. There were no questions about the attack — the young players impressed: Uzun scored twice and assisted, and Bahoya netted a brace. A pair of midfielders, Chaïbi and Larsson (also young), each provided an assist. Meanwhile, attacking leaders Doan and Burkardt remained silent. Well, there will be other opportunities. I particularly want to highlight the excellent play of Uzun and Bahoya. In the cup before this, the “Eagles” easily dispatched amateur side Engers from the Oberliga, facing no resistance. In four out of five friendlies, they managed to exceed an individual total of 1.5 goals, including against Aston Villa, but failed to do so against Fulham in London. There are no questions about the squad: they let Ekitiké go but immediately brought in two top players by Bundesliga standards – Doan and Burkardt. And there’s a whole host of promising youngsters progressing: Uzun, Bahoya, Braun, Collins, Baum, Larsson, Wahi, and Højlund – all of whom are highly prospective players and potentially very valuable assets.

Head-to-Head Encounters

It’s interesting here: in 11 consecutive matches, they have hit Over 2.5 goals + Both Teams to Score. That’s quite something! At Hoffenheim’s home ground, there has been an exchange of goals in eight consecutive meetings. And in recent years, Eintracht Frankfurt has been the primary contributor to the total goals. Last season, Hoffenheim drew 2-2 at home and lost 1-3 in Frankfurt. The season before, Eintracht won twice by 3-1 scores. I’ll also mention that Eintracht Frankfurt has scored at least two goals against Hoffenheim in 10 of their last 11 encounters.
