The Bundesliga continues its tradition of recognizing outstanding young talent with the coveted Rookie of the Month Award. For October, three promising players have been nominated: Luka Vušković from Hamburg, and the Bayer Leverkusen duo, Christian Kofane and Ernest Poku. It`s time to cast your vote for who you believe deserves this prestigious honor!

More on the Rookie of the Month Award

Meet the October Nominees

Luka Vušković (Hamburg)

Eighteen-year-old Luka Vušković, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, joined Hamburg just before the summer transfer window closed. Since Matchday 3, the Croatian defender has been a consistent presence, playing every minute of all six matches, including all three in October. He has established himself as a pivotal figure in HSV`s defensive trio.

Vušković showcased remarkable defensive prowess in October, winning an impressive 70% of his duels (50 out of 71) – a leading statistic for Hamburg. His aerial strength is particularly notable, with a 75% success rate in duels over the last three games. Despite his aggressive play, the Croatia international committed only one foul across his three October appearances. Beyond defense, Vušković is comfortable with the ball at his feet, recording the most possessions (246) and passes from open play (177 with 83% completion) for Hamburg in the same period.

Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin praised Vušković after a match against Heidenheim where the young player scored, stating, “He`s a player with immense potential, but also a lot of development ahead. We`re working closely with him, and he contributes significantly to our team`s performance.”

Christian Kofane (Bayer Leverkusen)

Christian Kofane arrived at Bayer Leverkusen in mid-July from Spanish second-division club Albacete. The 19-year-old quickly found himself in the spotlight due to an injury to striker Patrik Schick, leading him to start all three of Leverkusen`s Bundesliga matches in October.

Kofane proved his goal-scoring ability, netting against Union Berlin on Matchday 6 and adding another on Matchday 7 against Mainz, putting his team 2-0 ahead. His two goals in October were unsurpassed by any other Leverkusen player that month. He had also previously scored in the DFB Cup and Champions League, demonstrating his versatile finishing. In October, he registered 11 shots on goal: five with his right foot, four with his left, and two with his head.

Standing at 6`2″, Kofane combines his stature with impressive speed, clocking a top speed of 34.9 km/h in October (only marginally slower than teammate Arthur). During his 237 minutes of play that month, he completed 59 sprints, a figure only surpassed by Ernest Poku. Furthermore, Kofane`s 57% tackle success rate in October is remarkable for a striker.

Ernest Poku (Bayer Leverkusen)

Dutch U21 international Ernest Poku joined Bayer 04 from AZ Alkmaar in mid-August, and the move has proven highly successful. Poku started all three Bundesliga matches in October, contributing to a goal in each game with two goals and one assist. He notably scored the opening goal in both home victories against Union and Freiburg, showcasing his ability with both feet.

Poku`s two goals in October were matched by no other Leverkusen player, and his three total goal involvements put him level with Alejandro Grimaldo as the Rhinelanders` top contributor. Following the win against Freiburg, Poku expressed his ambitions: “I want to help the team, and I think I`m performing quite well right now. I hope to maintain this momentum, as I believe there`s still much more potential to unlock.”

Bayer 04 initially described Poku as a “lightning-fast wing player,” a description he lived up to in October. He reached a top speed of 33.5 km/h and completed a team-high 62 sprints. Additionally, the Hamburg-born forward maintained a strong 85% pass completion rate, highlighting his overall contribution.

How the Rookie of the Month Award Works

The Bundesliga continues to celebrate emerging talents with the Rookie of the Month award throughout the 2025/26 season. The selection process involves a combination of fan votes, club votes, and assessments from a panel of selected Bundesliga experts.

Vote Weighting

  • Fan votes: 40%
  • Club votes: 30%
  • Expert votes: 30%

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify as a rookie, players must meet specific requirements: they must be under 23 years old on the first matchday of the season and must not have been included in a starting line-up in any prior Bundesliga season. Furthermore, their total playing time in the Bundesliga before the current campaign must not exceed 450 minutes.

These criteria ensure that truly fresh talents, who may have only made brief appearances previously, get the chance to shine and be recognized. Monthly winners not only receive a prestigious Bundesliga trophy but also have the opportunity to defend their title the following month. At the end of the season, the overall Rookie of the Season is selected from the pool of monthly award recipients.
